Biography

I've always had a perverse interest in films and television. As a young boy growing up in New Zealand I spent every weekend going to the movies and my family opened one of the first video stores in my home town of Auckland.

I stumbled into television production at 17 working as a runner and eventually offline editor in a small commercial production house. From there I realised I had an interest in light and got a job as a lighting assistant at a new studio soap opera called Shortland Street (that has now been running as long as my career). There I also learnt the art of pedestal camera operation and location lighting. In my weekends I started shooting whatever I could get my hands on and this led to me being the youngest ever New Zealand Director of Photography on the indie feature film Topless Women Talk About Their Lives.

From there I split my time learning and operating steadicam, operating for other DPs from around the world and DPing myself. Many television series and features came along after that and eventually I also moved into shooting commercials as well as directing from time to time.

In 2007 I decided to move to the UK to pursue more drama work and found myself quickly helping out on the feature Tony for director Gerard Johnson and then leading the television series Merlin for the BBC.

I hope to further my skills and grow as a DP, ideally shooting more music-promos, commercials, high end television projects and feature films.

I'm also a committee and founding member of New Zealand's Cinematography Society, the NZCS
